Tiles to Tunnels is my first work to investigate these questions through a more abstract approach. It utilizes folding techniques to extend itself within space - only for the viewer to discover that they are all made of the same basic unit. Nevertheless, this monotony is intended to draw out an illusionistic sense of ‘otherworldliness’, to engage the viewer’s intimate attention: notice the figures (some half bodied, headless, crouching), the infrastructure (falling, barricading).

The drawings were appropriated from archival photographs of subway construction, and by recreating these images with my own hand, I hope to elevate past towards present and future. In a way, it is a commemoration of New York City’s history, by a foreigner who wishes to acknowledge it, and embrace it.
